Epicurious recognizes one best wine from all 50 states in its feature, The United States of Wine
It’s been a pretty good week here.
In addition to earning three gold medals at the recent Eastern International Wine Competition for wines in its portfolio, Botham Vineyards’ Uplands Reserve, an estate-grown, dry red, has been named Wisconsin’s BEST wine by the prestigious food and wine website, Epicurious.com. That’s Wisconsin’s BEST, from among more than 100 Wisconsin wineries.
“As winemakers press forward as pioneers, planting Old World grapes in new places and coaxing a surprising range of characteristics from native fruit, we’ve chosen the best, one from every state, to give you a real taste of America,” the Epicurious article said.
From our perspective, the really special thing about this is that it recognizes an estate-grown wine as Wisconsin’s best. We grow, produce and bottle this wine right here at the vineyard and this recognition is just further evidence that real Wisconsin wine produced vine-to-bottle can be of extraordinary quality and stand with the best from around the country.
Explaining its choice for Wisconsin’s best, Epicurious.com said, “The rolling hills of southwestern Wisconsin foster Marechal Foch vines, and at Botham Vineyards, the grape goes into the estate-grown Uplands Reserve, a dry red wine that also includes Léon Millot grapes. Expect soft and accessible with cherry, cranberry, and smoke on the finish. Try with one of Wisconsin’s 600 types of artisan cheese.”
Separate but equally exciting news this week came via results from the Eastern International Wine Competition (East Meets West) held in Sonoma, California on February 10. Our Cupola, Vin 10 and Finis wines each earned gold medals and our 2012 Field 3 and Riesling wines earned bronze medals. This is a highly regarded competition and we are pleased and proud to have earned the awards for these wines.
So yes. It’s been a pretty good week.
The International Eastern Wine Competition (IEWC), established in 1975, is one of the oldest and largest professional wine competitions in the United States. Entries are available to wineries produced in the East, making it a truly regional affair.
